Performance Testing in Zurich: Determining VO₂max and training zones on an individual basis

Do you train regularly, but aren’t quite sure whether your training intensity really matches your goal?

With our uVida Performance Analysis in Zurich We measure your respiratory gases during a structured graded exercise test. This provides us with personalised data on your VO₂max, your heart rate zones, your fat metabolism during exercise, your ventilatory thresholds and your maximum performance capacity.

We’ll then explain your results in a way that’s easy to understand and show you exactly how you can use them to inform your training.

uVida Activity Breathing Gas Analysis

Personalised training zones

Personal assessment

For beginners and athletes

Zurich Enge

Your performance analysis provides these figures

VO₂max

VO₂max describes the maximum amount of oxygen your body can take in and utilise during high-intensity exercise.

It is an important indicator of your endurance capacity and helps you to assess your current fitness level more objectively.

Personalised heart rate zones

You’ll be given personalised heart rate zones for different training intensities.

This allows you to tailor your light endurance sessions, base training, threshold training and high-intensity intervals more precisely.

FATmax

FATmax refers to the exercise intensity at which your body achieves its highest fat-burning rate during the test.

This figure may be particularly relevant for general endurance, weight management and prolonged endurance activities.

Ventilation thresholds

The first and second ventilatory thresholds – VT1 and VT2 – mark important transitions within your exercise zones.

They help us to distinguish more clearly between your light, moderate and intense training zones.

Maximum performance

Depending on the test protocol, we record your maximum power output in watts or your speed or pace.

We will also be looking at your maximum heart rate during the test.

Regeneration

We analyse how your body reacts immediately after exercise and how quickly relevant readings return to normal.

This provides further guidance for planning training workload and recovery.

What is performance assessment?

A fitness assessment examines how your body reacts to progressively greater physical exertion.

During the test, you will wear a breathing mask. At the same time, your breathing gases and heart rate will be monitored whilst the exercise intensity is gradually increased.

Among other things, the uVida Activity System analyses:

  • how much oxygen your body takes in

  • how much carbon dioxide you breathe out

  • which energy sources your body uses at different intensities

  • how your heart rate changes as the intensity increases

  • where your individual threshold ranges lie

  • what maximum power you achieve in the test

This results in a personalised performance profile.

The results show not only that, how well you’re currently performing, but above all, which areas you should focus on when training, so that you can work towards your personal goal more effectively.

Would you like to understand better how basic endurance works? Find out more in our guide to Zone 2 training.

Why measure training zones rather than just estimating them?

Many training plans and fitness watches determine heart rate zones using general formulas, age-based calculations or standardised percentages.

This can be helpful as a starting point. However, it does not fully take into account how your body actually reacts under stress.

Two people of the same age and with the same maximum heart rate may have different thresholds, different metabolic profiles and different optimal training zones.

Conventional estimation

  • General age formulas

  • percentage ranges of the maximum heart rate

  • standardised training zones

  • no direct measurement of respiratory gases

  • limited consideration of an individual’s fitness level

Performance analysis in Ultimate

  • structured proficiency test

  • Breath gas analysis during exercise

  • personalised heart rate zones

  • personal thresholds

  • VO₂max and FATmax

  • clear recommendations for training and recovery

Your sports watch tracks your training. Performance diagnostics help you to set it up correctly.

Once the analysis is complete, you can transfer your personalised heart rate zones to your watch and manage your daily training in a more targeted way.

Who would benefit from a performance assessment?

Our performance analysis is not just intended for competitive athletes.

It is suitable for anyone who no longer wishes to plan their endurance training solely on the basis of how they feel or general heart rate formulas.

Runners and marathon runners

Would you like to improve your basic endurance, get a better sense of your race pace, or prepare specifically for a half-marathon or marathon?

This analysis helps you to distinguish more clearly between easy endurance runs, tempo runs and high-intensity sessions.

Cyclists and triathletes

Personalised heart rate and power zones allow you to tailor your cycling sessions more precisely.

Depending on the test protocol, your results can also be converted into watt ranges.

HYROX and Hybrid athletes

In HYROX and other hybrid competitions, endurance challenges alternate with strength-endurance challenges.

A good aerobic base, high oxygen uptake and rapid recovery between periods of exertion can therefore be crucial factors in performance.

Fitness enthusiasts and team sports players

Whether it’s tennis, football, martial arts or general fitness training, good endurance helps you to sustain exertion for longer and recover more quickly between periods of intense activity.

Beginners and those returning to the sport

You don’t need to be fit already to benefit from a performance analysis.

The placement test is tailored to your current level of ability. This means that, right from the start, you’ll be given materials that match your actual starting point.

People who have hit a training plateau

Do you train regularly, but find your performance is hardly improving any more? Performance diagnostics show whether your training intensity, aerobic base or threshold zones are set at the optimal levels. This enables us to tailor your training specifically and introduce new performance stimuli.

This is how your performance analysis in Zurich works

1. Goals and health consultation

To start with, we’ll discuss your personal goal, your sport, your current training regime and your current level of performance.

We also clarify the relevant health requirements for the stress test.

2. Preparation and warm-up

We’ll explain the procedure to you, fit the breathing mask and get you ready for the test.

After a short warm-up, the actual grading test begins.

3. Exercise stress test

The intensity is gradually increased on the treadmill or exercise bike.

Meanwhile, your respiratory gases, heart rate and performance are continuously monitored. The actual stress test usually lasts about 20 minutes.

4. Personal assessment

After the test, we’ll go through your results step by step.

Among other things, you’ll learn:

  • how your current VO₂max compares
  • where your individual training zones lie
  • at what intensity your fat metabolism is at its highest
  • where your ventilatory thresholds lie
  • how you can use your heart rate, pace or wattage zones during training
  • which training areas are most relevant to your goal

Total duration of the appointment: approx. 45 minutes

What do your results mean for your training?

A list of measurements alone won’t improve your performance.

The crucial step is to translate the results into a concrete training strategy.

Basic endurance and Zone 2

Your lower training zones form the basis for longer, controlled endurance sessions.

They are particularly important if you want to build up your aerobic base, cope better with longer periods of exertion or increase your training volume.

Fat Metabolism Training

Using your FATmax value, we can determine the intensity at which your body achieves its highest fat-burning rate during the measurement.

This information can be used for longer endurance sessions and targeted metabolic development.

Threshold and speed training

Your threshold zones help us to plan intense but manageable training loads in a more targeted way.

This is relevant, for example, for tempo runs, longer intervals and competition-specific sessions.

VO₂max and interval training

Targeted, high-intensity intervals can be used to improve maximum oxygen uptake.

Your analysis provides the basis for tailoring these sessions to your current fitness level.

Recovery and exercise management

Not every training session needs to be intense.

Your personalised zones help to distinguish more clearly between high-intensity and low-intensity sessions and avoid unnecessary fatigue.

Performance analysis for your sporting goal

Marathon and half-marathon

Preparing for a successful marathon involves more than just running as many kilometres as possible.

The key is to strike the right balance between easy endurance runs, longer runs, tempo runs, interval training, strength training and recovery.

Your performance analysis provides personalised heart rate and pace zones, which can be used to plan these sessions in a more targeted way.

Cycling and Triathlon

When cycling, training intensity can also be controlled using wattage figures.

The combination of heart rate, power output, respiratory gases and perceived exertion provides a better basis for structured training planning.

Your performance analysis provides personalised heart rate and pace zones, which can be used to plan these sessions in a more targeted way.

HYROX and functional fitness

At HYROX, running sessions alternate with functional training.

Performance testing helps you to better assess your aerobic capacity, your threshold performance and your recovery during exercise.

Health and Weight Management

Even if you don’t have a competition goal, a performance analysis can still be useful.

It shows you the areas in which you can train in a controlled manner and how to tailor your endurance training to your current level of fitness.

Exercise analysis or metabolic analysis – what’s the difference?

Both analyses measure respiratory gases. However, they address different questions.

Resting metabolic analysis

The metabolic analysis is carried out whilst at rest.

It provides information on your basal metabolic rate as well as your fat and carbohydrate metabolism at rest.

The key question is:
How does your body use energy at rest?

Performance analysis under stress

The performance assessment takes place during an increasingly demanding level test.

Among other things, it provides information on VO₂max, heart rate zones, FATmax, thresholds and maximum performance.

The key question is:
How does your body react to physical exertion, and how should you exercise?

The combination

If you want to base your nutrition and training on a shared set of data, you can combine both analyses.

This allows us to assess both your resting metabolic rate and your response to exercise.

The extent of the test depends on the chosen protocol, your physical condition and your goal. You will be given a detailed explanation of the procedure before it begins.

A sports watch is excellent for tracking your heart rate, pace, performance and training sessions in your day-to-day life.

However, many training zones and VO₂max values are estimated using algorithms. With the uVida performance analysis, your respiratory gases are also measured during a controlled exercise test.

Once you’ve carried out the analysis, you can transfer the results to your sports watch.

The metabolic analysis is carried out whilst you are at rest and assesses your basal metabolic rate as well as how your body utilises fat and carbohydrates.

The performance analysis is carried out whilst you are exercising and assesses your performance capacity, training zones, thresholds and VO₂max.

That depends on your goal and your training phase.

It is particularly useful to carry out a further analysis following a structured training block or before starting preparations for a new competition. This allows changes to be assessed objectively and training zones to be adjusted.
